Long before Priscilla\u2014and before many of the adventures that would shape our love of the waterways\u2014there was a hire boat on the River Thames.<\/p>\n
In November 2011, before we were married or had moved to Sussex, we joined our good friends Dan and Jeff for our first canal and river trip together.<\/p>\n
None of us could have known quite where that first journey might eventually lead.<\/p>\n
The November air was crisp as we settled aboard and began following the Thames.<\/p>\n
It was our first experience of cruising together: the gentle rhythm of the engine, the changing riverside scenery and the simple pleasure of travelling without any need to hurry.<\/p>\n
We soon found our rhythm, helped by plenty of laughter and light-hearted banter between the four of us.<\/p>\n
As we passed Windsor, the castle rose above the surrounding landscape. Framed by the golden colours of late autumn and reflected in the calm water, it gave the journey an appropriately grand backdrop.<\/p>\n
For two people just beginning to discover boating together, it was difficult to imagine a better introduction.<\/p>\n
We moored near Bray with something particularly special planned for the evening: dinner at Heston Blumenthal\u2019s celebrated restaurant, The Fat Duck.<\/p>\n
The meal was far more than dinner. Every course brought another surprise, combining unexpected flavours, textures and theatrical touches into an experience unlike anything we had encountered before.<\/p>\n
Just as memorable was the company. Sitting around the table with Dan and Jeff, sharing stories and laughter, transformed an extraordinary meal into a cherished memory.<\/p>\n
It remains one of those rare evenings that still feels vivid many years later.<\/p>\n
Looking back, the trip represented much more than a weekend on the Thames.<\/p>\n
We were not yet married. Sussex had not yet become home. Many of the plans that would shape our life together were still only ideas.<\/p>\n
The journey gave us a first glimpse of something that would become increasingly important: the pleasure of travelling slowly, experiencing the landscape from the water and sharing an adventure with people we cared about.<\/p>\n
Many more boating holidays would follow, but this was where our story on the waterways began.<\/p>\n
Our first trip together contained beautiful scenery, excellent food, close friendship and the excitement of discovering an entirely new way to travel.<\/p>\n
At the time, it was simply a memorable weekend.<\/p>\n
