{"id":239,"date":"2024-10-12T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-12T12:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/pqoc.co.uk\/planning-for-onboard-technology-preparing-for-security-comfort-and-connectivity-on-our-narrowboat\/"},"modified":"2024-10-12T12:00:00","modified_gmt":"2024-10-12T12:00:00","slug":"planning-for-onboard-technology-preparing-for-security-comfort-and-connectivity-on-our-narrowboat","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/pqoc.co.uk\/fr\/planning-for-onboard-technology-preparing-for-security-comfort-and-connectivity-on-our-narrowboat\/","title":{"rendered":"Planning for Onboard Technology: Preparing for Security, Comfort and Connectivity on Our Narrowboat"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Technology aboard Priscilla should make life safer, simpler and more comfortable\u2014not leave us dependent upon an assortment of cloud services, subscriptions and fragile wireless devices.<\/p>\n<p>As we plan our 58-foot all-electric narrowboat, we want to create an integrated onboard system covering:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Safety and environmental monitoring<\/li>\n<li>Security and CCTV<\/li>\n<li>Location tracking<\/li>\n<li>Satellite and mobile connectivity<\/li>\n<li>Entertainment and media storage<\/li>\n<li>Energy monitoring<\/li>\n<li>Remote alerts and automation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The challenge will be ensuring these systems remain reliable despite limited power, intermittent internet access, vibration, condensation and the difficulty of replacing equipment concealed behind the fit-out.<\/p>\n<h2>Designing the digital infrastructure first<\/h2>\n<p>Technology is often added to a boat after construction, resulting in exposed cables, overloaded sockets and equipment installed wherever space happens to remain.<\/p>\n<p>Priscilla\u2019s digital infrastructure should instead be considered during the initial design. This could include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dedicated equipment cupboard with ventilation<\/li>\n<li>Accessible cable routes and inspection panels<\/li>\n<li>Ethernet cabling to fixed equipment<\/li>\n<li>Separate low-voltage power circuits<\/li>\n<li>Roof penetrations and mounting points<\/li>\n<li>Spare conduits for future upgrades<\/li>\n<li>Clearly labelled wiring<\/li>\n<li>Uninterruptible power for essential equipment<\/li>\n<li>Suitable locations for antennas and cameras<\/li>\n<li>Protection from condensation and water<\/li>\n<li>Space for routers, network switches and storage<\/li>\n<li>Documented network and wiring diagrams<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Technology will change considerably before Priscilla is built. The specification should therefore concentrate on infrastructure, standards and desired outcomes rather than committing too early to particular products.<\/p>\n<h2>Local control rather than cloud dependence<\/h2>\n<p>Many domestic smart devices depend upon an external cloud service. If the internet connection, manufacturer\u2019s server or subscription fails, important functions may become unavailable.<\/p>\n<p>Priscilla should use a local-first control system wherever practical. Core monitoring, alarms and automations should continue operating onboard even when both satellite and mobile connections are unavailable.<\/p>\n<p>A central system could integrate:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Bilge and moisture sensors<\/li>\n<li>Tank levels<\/li>\n<li>Battery and electrical data<\/li>\n<li>Temperature and humidity<\/li>\n<li>Smoke and carbon-monoxide alerts<\/li>\n<li>Door and hatch sensors<\/li>\n<li>CCTV events<\/li>\n<li>Heating and ventilation<\/li>\n<li>Lighting<\/li>\n<li>Pumps<\/li>\n<li>Shore-power status<\/li>\n<li>GPS position<\/li>\n<li>Internet connections<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Remote access should be an additional benefit, not a requirement for basic operation.<\/p>\n<p>Essential controls must also retain manual operation. We should still be able to switch on a light, isolate a pump, control the heating or open a door if the automation system fails.<\/p>\n<h2>Safety monitoring<\/h2>\n<p>Safety alarms must be selected and positioned for the marine environment. General-purpose domestic smart sensors should not replace recognised life-safety equipment.<\/p>\n<h3>Smoke alarms<\/h3>\n<p>Smoke alarms should be audible throughout the boat, particularly from sleeping areas with doors closed. Their location must avoid predictable false alarms from cooking fumes, steam, open windows and roof vents.<\/p>\n<p>The Boat Safety Scheme advises that boat alarms must account for humidity, temperature variation, movement and vibration. It also recommends testing alarm audibility before permanently fixing them. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boatsafetyscheme.org\/stay-safe-advice\/fire-safety-for-boats\/smoke-alarms-for-boats\/\">Boat Safety Scheme smoke-alarm guidance<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Priscilla should have compliant standalone alarms even if their status is also monitored electronically. A network or automation failure must not prevent the alarm sounding locally.<\/p>\n<h3>Carbon-monoxide detection<\/h3>\n<p>Carbon monoxide remains relevant even on an electrically propelled boat.<\/p>\n<p>Possible sources include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A diesel or solid-fuel heater<\/li>\n<li>A generator<\/li>\n<li>Cooking equipment<\/li>\n<li>Exhaust entering from a neighbouring boat<\/li>\n<li>Equipment used near an open door, hatch or window<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The Boat Safety Scheme recommends alarms meeting BS EN 50291, with BS EN 50291-2 providing greater assurance for marine use. Cabins containing fuel-burning appliances and sleeping areas may require separate protection depending upon the layout and equipment. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boatsafetyscheme.org\/stay-safe-advice\/fire-safety-for-boats\/smoke-alarms-for-boats\/alarm-features\/\">Boat Safety Scheme alarm guidance<\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Temperature and humidity<\/h3>\n<p>Sensors could monitor:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Living accommodation<\/li>\n<li>Battery compartments<\/li>\n<li>Electrical equipment cupboards<\/li>\n<li>Underfloor spaces<\/li>\n<li>Food storage<\/li>\n<li>Water tanks<\/li>\n<li>External conditions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Temperature data could warn of frost risk, battery-temperature limits or failed heating. Humidity trends could help identify inadequate ventilation and areas at risk of condensation or mould.<\/p>\n<p>The system should distinguish between useful trends and emergencies. Frequent, low-value notifications are likely to be ignored.<\/p>\n<h3>Moisture and bilge monitoring<\/h3>\n<p>Moisture sensors should be placed wherever an undetected leak could cause serious damage, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The bilge<\/li>\n<li>Beneath the freshwater tank<\/li>\n<li>Around the calorifier<\/li>\n<li>Under sinks and showers<\/li>\n<li>Beside the washing machine and dishwasher<\/li>\n<li>Beneath pumps and filters<\/li>\n<li>Near vulnerable hull penetrations<\/li>\n<li>Below battery or electrical compartments where appropriate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A single water sensor in the bilge would not provide sufficient coverage. Water may remain trapped elsewhere before reaching it.<\/p>\n<p>Possible responses could include:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Sounding a local alarm.<\/li>\n<li>Sending a remote notification.<\/li>\n<li>Identifying the affected zone.<\/li>\n<li>Closing an electrically operated freshwater isolation valve.<\/li>\n<li>Stopping the domestic water pump.<\/li>\n<li>Activating a suitable bilge pump where safe.<\/li>\n<li>Escalating the warning if the water level continues to rise.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Automatic responses must be carefully designed. A faulty sensor should not disable an essential system without warning, and no automation should create an additional flooding or electrical risk.<\/p>\n<h2>GPS tracking and movement alerts<\/h2>\n<p>Priscilla should carry a discreet tracking system that is separate from the visible navigation equipment.<\/p>\n<p>Useful capabilities could include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Live or periodic location reporting<\/li>\n<li>Journey history<\/li>\n<li>Geofencing<\/li>\n<li>Unexpected-movement alerts<\/li>\n<li>Battery-disconnection alerts<\/li>\n<li>Independent backup power<\/li>\n<li>Tamper detection<\/li>\n<li>More than one communications route<\/li>\n<li>Location sharing during selected journeys<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A tracker that relies solely upon the boat\u2019s main internet connection could become useless if a thief disconnects the router or electrical system. An independent cellular tracker with its own backup battery may therefore be valuable.<\/p>\n<p>GPS itself provides position data but does not transmit it. Remote tracking will still require a cellular, satellite or other communications connection.<\/p>\n<p>Geofencing will also need sensible tolerances. GPS readings can drift, particularly near buildings, trees, tunnels and covered moorings. An alert should be triggered by credible movement rather than a single inaccurate position.<\/p>\n<h2>CCTV and external security<\/h2>\n<p>Exterior cameras could help us monitor Priscilla while she is unattended and provide evidence following theft or damage.<\/p>\n<p>The system might include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cameras covering bow and stern access<\/li>\n<li>Door and hatch detection<\/li>\n<li>Motion-based recording<\/li>\n<li>Low-light capability<\/li>\n<li>Local encrypted storage<\/li>\n<li>Remote event notifications<\/li>\n<li>A visible security camera or warning light<\/li>\n<li>Battery-backed operation<\/li>\n<li>Tamper alerts<\/li>\n<li>Privacy zones<\/li>\n<li>Configurable retention periods<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Continuous high-resolution cloud recording would consume significant bandwidth and power. A more appropriate design may record locally while transmitting only alerts, thumbnails or selected clips.<\/p>\n<h3>CCTV limitations<\/h3>\n<p>Cameras should supplement good physical security rather than replace it.<\/p>\n<p>Priscilla will still require:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Strong locks<\/li>\n<li>Secure windows and hatches<\/li>\n<li>Protected external equipment<\/li>\n<li>Discreet installation of valuable electronics<\/li>\n<li>Equipment serial-number records<\/li>\n<li>Appropriate insurance<\/li>\n<li>Sensible mooring choices<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>External cameras may also capture towpaths, neighbouring boats and members of the public. The Information Commissioner\u2019s Office advises that where domestic CCTV records beyond the property boundary, users should have a clear reason, minimise the area captured, provide appropriate signage and delete recordings regularly. People recorded may also have rights concerning their footage. <a href=\"https:\/\/ico.org.uk\/for-the-public\/home-cctv-systems\/\">ICO domestic CCTV guidance<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Audio recording is particularly intrusive and should normally be disabled unless there is a clear and proportionate reason for using it.<\/p>\n<p>Camera positioning, privacy masking and limited retention should therefore form part of the design.<\/p>\n<h2>Connectivity: satellite, 5G and Wi-Fi<\/h2>\n<p>Reliable connectivity will support work, communication, navigation updates, entertainment and remote monitoring.<\/p>\n<p>However, no single connection will work everywhere.<\/p>\n<h3>Satellite internet<\/h3>\n<p>Satellite broadband could provide high-speed internet in locations with poor mobile coverage, but it is not automatically the best connection to use continuously.<\/p>\n<p>Its performance will depend upon:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A sufficiently clear view of the sky<\/li>\n<li>Trees and buildings<\/li>\n<li>Bridges and tunnels<\/li>\n<li>Equipment position<\/li>\n<li>Service coverage and congestion<\/li>\n<li>The subscription and mobility terms<\/li>\n<li>Power consumption<\/li>\n<li>Secure mounting<\/li>\n<li>Cable routing<\/li>\n<li>Exposure to impact or theft<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Roof space will also be valuable for solar panels, navigation equipment and safe movement. The satellite terminal must not create excessive shading or an obstruction.<\/p>\n<p>Power consumption is particularly important aboard an electric boat. Current equipment varies considerably: Starlink states that its Mini terminal typically consumes approximately 25\u201340W, while its Standard terminal typically requires substantially more. The exact products available when Priscilla is built will undoubtedly change. <a href=\"https:\/\/starlink.com\/public-files\/specification_sheet_mini.pdf\">Starlink Mini specification<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Even a continuous 30W load consumes:<\/p>\n<p>30W \u00d7 24h = 720Wh<\/p>\n<p>The satellite connection should therefore be capable of sleeping or switching off when it is not required.<\/p>\n<h3>5G and 4G connectivity<\/h3>\n<p>A marine-grade mobile router with external antennas could provide the everyday connection where cellular coverage is available.<\/p>\n<p>It may offer:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lower power consumption<\/li>\n<li>Lower operating cost<\/li>\n<li>Better performance beneath trees<\/li>\n<li>No requirement for an open view of the sky<\/li>\n<li>Multiple SIM support<\/li>\n<li>Automatic network selection<\/li>\n<li>External antenna connections<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Although initially described as a backup, mobile data may prove more efficient as the preferred connection in areas with strong coverage, with satellite activated when mobile service becomes inadequate.<\/p>\n<p>The final router should be able to manage automatic failover based upon actual connectivity\u2014not merely whether it can detect a mobile signal.<\/p>\n<p>A resilient design might therefore use:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Trusted marina or home Wi-Fi when suitable.<\/li>\n<li>Mobile broadband as the normal travelling connection.<\/li>\n<li>Satellite when terrestrial connections are inadequate.<\/li>\n<li>Independent low-bandwidth cellular communication for critical tracking and alarms.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>This arrangement should be tested in practice because automatic failover can be unreliable if a connection remains technically active but cannot carry useful data.<\/p>\n<h2>The onboard network<\/h2>\n<p>Priscilla should have a wired and wireless local network that remains functional without internet access.<\/p>\n<p>Fixed equipment such as cameras, televisions, storage and control systems should use Ethernet where practical. Wired connections are generally more predictable and reduce wireless congestion.<\/p>\n<p>The network could be divided into separate segments for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Personal computers and phones<\/li>\n<li>Smart televisions and entertainment<\/li>\n<li>CCTV and security<\/li>\n<li>Automation and IoT devices<\/li>\n<li>Guests<\/li>\n<li>Boat engineering and monitoring<\/li>\n<li>Public or marina Wi-Fi access<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This separation could prevent an insecure entertainment or IoT device from gaining unrestricted access to safety monitoring, personal files or boat controls.<\/p>\n<p>Public marina Wi-Fi should be treated as untrusted. The system should connect through the boat\u2019s own router and security controls rather than allowing individual onboard devices to join it directly.<\/p>\n<h2>Cybersecurity<\/h2>\n<p>Remote access introduces risk alongside convenience.<\/p>\n<p>A compromised camera, router or automation system could expose private footage, reveal Priscilla\u2019s location or interfere with onboard equipment.<\/p>\n<p>The National Cyber Security Centre recommends changing default passwords, enabling two-step verification and disabling remote access where it is not required. It also emphasises keeping devices and software updated. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsc.gov.uk\/guidance\/smart-devices-in-the-home\">NCSC smart-device guidance<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Priscilla\u2019s cybersecurity specification should include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Unique credentials for every critical service<\/li>\n<li>Password-manager use<\/li>\n<li>Two-step verification<\/li>\n<li>Encrypted remote access<\/li>\n<li>Automatic security updates where appropriate<\/li>\n<li>A documented update process<\/li>\n<li>Network separation<\/li>\n<li>Firewall rules<\/li>\n<li>No unnecessary internet-exposed services<\/li>\n<li>Encrypted backups<\/li>\n<li>Recovery codes stored safely offline<\/li>\n<li>A method of revoking access from lost phones<\/li>\n<li>Replacement plans for unsupported equipment<\/li>\n<li>Regular review of authorised users<\/li>\n<li>Secure deletion before equipment disposal<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Directly exposing cameras or automation dashboards to the internet should be avoided. Security must remain proportionate to the risks.<\/p>\n<h2>Designing for repair and obsolescence<\/h2>\n<p>Priscilla\u2019s hull may last for many decades, while digital equipment may become obsolete
