Knot Just for Laughs: The Serious Side of Narrowboat Ropes

Ropes may appear to be among the simplest pieces of equipment aboard a narrowboat, but they are essential to safe and confident boat handling.

The bow, stern and centre lines each perform a different job. They help us secure the boat, bring it alongside the bank and maintain control while approaching locks or waiting at landing stages.

Choosing them involves more than selecting an arbitrary length. Each line must provide sufficient reach without creating unnecessary rope that could trail in the water, catch around somebody’s feet or reach the propeller.

Bow and stern lines

The bow and stern lines are the boat’s principal mooring ropes.

Together, they prevent the boat moving forwards or backwards and hold it against the bank. They may be attached to rings, bollards, piling hooks, chains or mooring pins, depending upon the location.

Our original suggestion of 10–15 feet would be too short for many full-length narrowboats and mooring situations. There is no universal measurement, but the lines need enough length to reach suitable fixing points even when these are not conveniently positioned beside the bow or stern.

For many narrowboats, bow and stern lines of approximately 8–12 metres—around 26–40 feet—provide a more practical starting point. The final specification should reflect:

  • The boat’s length
  • The position of its attachment points
  • Whether the rope remains permanently attached
  • The waterways we intend to cruise
  • The types of locks and moorings encountered
  • The crew’s preferred handling method
  • The ability to coil and stow it securely

A line should be long enough to be useful without leaving an excessive quantity of rope on the deck, roof or towpath.

The role of the centre line

The centre line is normally attached to a strong point near the middle of the boat. It allows somebody ashore to control the boat from a single position while approaching a mooring, waiting at a lock or holding briefly against the bank.

Because the line acts close to the boat’s centre, pulling it usually brings the whole boat towards the handler. Pulling only from the bow or stern is more likely to swing the opposite end away.

The centre line is particularly useful for a small crew, but it has an important limitation: it is intended primarily for handling the boat, not for leaving it permanently moored. How long should a centre line be?

There is no single correct centre-line length.

A useful principle is that it should comfortably reach the steering position and the bank but should not be able to reach the propeller if accidentally dropped over the side.

That makes the attachment point as important as the total length.

On a long narrowboat, one extremely long centre line may appear versatile, but it also creates more rope to manage. An alternative is to fit two centre lines—or separate port and starboard lines—so that one is readily available on either side of the boat.

The appropriate arrangement should be determined on the completed boat by measuring from its actual attachment points and confirming where every loose end could reach.

Longer centre lines

A longer centre line can offer several advantages:

  • Greater reach when stepping ashore
  • More flexibility where bollards are widely spaced
  • Easier handling from high or awkward lock sides
  • The ability to pass the line to somebody ashore
  • More scope to control the boat from different positions

However, additional length also brings risks:

  • More rope that could fall into the water
  • Greater possibility of reaching the propeller
  • Increased risk of tangling around fittings or feet
  • More difficult coiling and stowage
  • A greater temptation to use the rope incorrectly in a lock

A long line is not inherently safer merely because it offers more reach. Its value depends upon how it is handled and stored.

Shorter centre lines

A shorter centre line is generally easier to manage and may be less likely to reach the propeller.

Its advantages include:

  • Faster and simpler stowage
  • Less loose rope on the roof
  • Reduced risk of snagging
  • Easier handling for one person
  • Lower likelihood of trailing in the water

If it is too short, however, it may not reach the bank safely or provide enough flexibility at locks and landing stages. A crew member should never be encouraged to jump, overreach or take an unsafe step simply because the rope lacks sufficient length.

Two centre lines rather than one

For Priscilla, one option worth considering is a pair of centre lines—one arranged for each side of the boat.

This could provide:

  • A line immediately available on the towpath side
  • Less need to throw rope across solar panels or roof equipment
  • Shorter individual lines
  • Simpler handling by a two-person crew
  • Reduced quantities of loose rope
  • Greater flexibility when approaching an unfamiliar bank

The attachment points would need to be structurally suitable and carefully positioned. A roof-mounted fitting must withstand the forces likely to be applied to it; it should not be assumed that any convenient handrail or decorative fitting is strong enough.

Ropes and propellers

A rope around the propeller can deprive the steerer of control precisely when the engine is most needed.

It may stall the propulsion system, damage equipment or require somebody to enter the weed hatch to remove the obstruction. Prevention is considerably easier and safer than dealing with the consequences.

Good practice includes:

  • Coiling ropes securely when they are not being used
  • Keeping loose ends away from the stern
  • Never allowing a rope to trail in the water
  • Checking the roof before engaging the propeller
  • Avoiding coils that can tighten around hands or feet
  • Keeping ropes clear of vents, solar panels and other equipment
  • Inspecting lines regularly for wear, contamination and damage
  • Replacing ropes before their condition becomes doubtful

Safe rope handling

The rope should control the boat—not the person handling it.

A moving narrowboat carries considerable momentum, even at low speed. A crew member should not wrap a line around a hand, arm or body, nor attempt to stop a moving boat by holding a rope through brute force.

Where a bollard is used, the line can normally be passed around it to provide controlled friction while remaining ready to release. It should not be tied so firmly that it cannot be loosened as the water level changes.

Other important principles include:

  • Do not stand inside a coil or loop
  • Keep hands away from pinch points
  • Never jump from the boat while holding a rope
  • Do not use a line to stop a boat that should first be stopped by propulsion
  • Maintain communication between the steerer and shore crew
  • Release the rope immediately if retaining it would endanger somebody
  • Keep spare rope and throwing lines available where appropriate

Special care in locks

Rope handling in locks depends upon the type of lock, local instructions, water movement and the position of the boat.

A line that is tied tightly while a lock empties could suspend or tip the boat. During filling, an incorrectly positioned boat may be pulled towards the gates or caught against projections in the chamber.

Ropes should therefore remain capable of being adjusted or released immediately. They should never be relied upon as a substitute for correct positioning, attentive steering and control of the paddles.

Before using an unfamiliar lock, we should follow the navigation authority’s local guidance. Large river locks, mechanised locks and tidal waterways may require different arrangements from an ordinary narrow canal lock.

Selecting the rope itself

Length is only one part of the specification.

The rope must also be comfortable to handle, sufficiently strong, resistant to abrasion and compatible with the boat’s dollies, studs, fairleads and other fittings.

We will need to consider:

  • Diameter and grip
  • Breaking strength
  • Stretch characteristics
  • Resistance to abrasion
  • Behaviour when wet
  • Ease of coiling
  • Visibility
  • Resistance to ultraviolet exposure
  • Compatibility with knots and splices
  • Whether the rope floats
  • Ease of inspection and replacement

A very thin rope may be strong enough on paper but unpleasant to grip under load. An excessively thick rope may be difficult to secure around the boat’s fittings. Practical handling matters as much as quoted strength.

Designing Priscilla’s rope arrangements

Priscilla’s roof is expected to carry solar panels, ventilation openings and other equipment. Rope handling must therefore form part of the boat’s design rather than being considered after construction.

We will need to determine:

  • The position and strength of every attachment point
  • Whether one or two centre lines work best
  • Safe routes across or beside the roof
  • How ropes can be reached from the steering position
  • Whether any line could reach the propeller
  • Where coiled ropes will be secured
  • How fittings will remain accessible
  • Whether the arrangement works from either side
  • How it can be used safely by either of us
  • What additional lines are required for rivers and unusual conditions

The best arrangement will be the one that works naturally during everyday cruising without depending upon perfect rope handling every time.

Finding the right balance

Longer ropes offer reach and flexibility, while shorter ropes can be easier to control and keep away from the propeller. Neither is automatically correct in every situation.

Our eventual specification should be based upon Priscilla’s dimensions, attachment points and intended cruising grounds. The lines should then be tested during commissioning and adjusted in response to practical experience.

The guiding principles are straightforward:

  • Long enough to perform the intended task
  • Short enough to manage safely
  • Strong and comfortable to handle
  • Positioned where they can be reached easily
  • Coiled and secured whenever they are not in use
  • Never allowed to trail near the propeller

Ropes may not be the most glamorous part of planning a narrowboat, but their design and use can make the difference between a calm manoeuvre and a dangerous situation.

There may be plenty of scope for knot-related jokes—but the ropes themselves deserve to be taken seriously.
